Rope Rescue Technician

Valid for 3 Years | Rescue 3 International | $795.00

This Technical Rope Rescue course is designed to take students from basic high angle rope rescue skills to progressively more vertical systems and scenarios. Students learn and practice such skills as:

  • pre-planning

  • size-up and scene management

  • ascending and descending past knots

  • complex mechanical advantage systems

  • lowering and raising systems

  • litter attending in various positions

  • guiding lines and other offsets

  • introduction to highlines

Completion of the RRT class satisfies the NFPA requirements for Technical Rope Technician level training. In addition, Technician level training is mandatory for inclusion on many Federal Emergency Management Agency Teams at different levels. Operations Level is a prerequisite to this course and it is the second of three courses necessary to meet the standard requirement for full NFPA Swiftwater Rescue Technician level certification.

Course Details

  • Rope Rescue Technician continues to build on the skills learned in the Operations level course. This course enables small teams to execute technical rope rescues in a variety of locations.

These could include needing to offset the litter or rescuers away from the cliff face or around obstacles, needing to problem solve while doing pickoffs or ascending or depending, difficult edge transitions, command and control of a rescue operation, and introduction to highline operations.

  • This rigging course requires the Rope Rescue Operator or comparable course to be completed prior to course start.

Students must be 18 years old at the time of course start.

  • Certification for Rope Rescue Technician is offered through Rescue 3 International.

Course is valid for 3 years from date of completion.

 FAQs

  • We recommend that those who would like to manage a technical rope rescue take both Operations and Technician level courses. The ability to look at a problem and understand the variety of options available to the team are important skills to have for technical rigging supervisors. Many of the skills needed higher level thinking when running a rescue come with more time and evolutions and the Rope Rescue Technician offers more of this time.

  • Whether bringing on new team members or setting up a Technical Rope Rescue team it is important to have a solid progression to support the learning and retention of rescue skills.

Black Fox Rescue Institute offers a progression of certifications that can be used to onboard teams and team members to high angle rescue.

Operations level is the starting point for learning how to tie knots, build anchors, create mechanical advantage, set up lowering systems be mobile on ropes, and combine it all into a rescue system.

Technician level builds on the operations level building blocks with additional practice, skills and techniques for rope rescue. Skills like passing knots, changing litter orientation, offsets to avoid obstacles, and an introduction to high lines are covered in this level of rigging course.

The specialist level offers a deeper understanding of highlines, artificial high directionals and leading a team in complex scenarios.

  • For a more robust high angle rescue personal kit we recommend adding the following to your helmet, harness, gloves and good footwear:

Ascending system (Chest ascender, and hand ascender), personal adjustable tethers, 2-3 spectra slings, Auto-locking decent control device, 30’ of Sterling Powercord, 4-5 Locking carabiners, Petzl Roll Clip and Tibloc, and a knife.

  • If you are unable to attend all the days of the course you will unfortunately not be able to be certified at that course level. You may be able to get a certification at a lower level or you may only be able to get the information and training.

We do our best to accommodate students personal needs but in order to protect the integrity of the certification students need to be a part of the entire course and demonstrate understanding of all the material.

“In the midst of the heartbreak and wreckage of 9-11, the world also witnessed what is America's greatest strength. Firefighters, nurses, police officers, first responders and local residents worked around the clock to rescue and care for those injured.”
